About Me

My name is Frances Staples, though most know me as Frankie. I am a Postdoctoral Scholar in the Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, University of California Los Angeles. Prior to this I obtained my PhD in space plasma physics from the Mullard Space Science Laboratory, University College London.

My research focuses on unravelling the mysteries of the near-Earth space environment, also called space weather. I became fascinated with this topic because of its global relevance; space weather is not only the spectacular auroral light show seen in arctic regions, it also impacts modern technologies such as satellite communications, GPS, radio signals, and power grids on Earth. Understanding and predicting space weather can prevent widespread disruptions to people's lives.

Today, I focus on understanding the dynamics of the Van Allen belts, using advanced models and satellite observations to predict radiation exposure to space based infrastructure. My goal is to enhance our ability to safeguard satellites and astronauts from these powerful natural phenomena while sharing my love for space science through public outreach and education.
